Commercial VRF & VRV systems in Wellington

Multi-zone commercial air conditioning

Control each space. Plan the whole system.

Winter AC installs, replaces and services commercial VRF and VRV air conditioning systems across Greater Wellington. We help project teams assess zoning, plant location, pipe routes, controls and future service access before settling on the system.

Where VRF and VRV can fit

Variable refrigerant flow systems connect multiple indoor units to outdoor plant and provide control across different spaces. VRV is Daikin’s name for this type of technology. These systems can suit buildings with several rooms or zones, subject to the building’s design requirements.

The appropriate configuration depends on the heating and cooling loads, occupancy patterns and whether different areas need heating and cooling at the same time. Available outdoor space, pipe lengths and manufacturer requirements also affect selection.

Design around use, access and control

  • Review room use, operating hours and zone-control requirements.
  • Select indoor unit arrangements that suit the ceilings and room layouts.
  • Check outdoor locations, airflow, noise and maintenance clearances.
  • Coordinate refrigerant pipe routes, drains and electrical supplies.
  • Agree local controls, central scheduling and any BMS interface.
  • Confirm ventilation requirements separately from space heating and cooling.

Replacing an existing VRF or VRV system

A replacement may affect more than the outdoor units. We check compatibility between indoor units, controls, refrigerant, pipework and the proposed equipment, together with the condition of the existing installation.

Some replacement solutions allow selected components to be retained, but only where the manufacturer’s requirements and site checks support it. We do not assume old pipework or controls can be reused. Access, isolation and the changeover programme are included in the assessment.

Commission the system and its controls

The agreed commissioning scope should establish that the installation, operating modes, zone controls and any central interfaces perform as intended. It also needs to account for the selected refrigerant and the manufacturer’s installation and safety requirements.

We discuss handover information and maintenance access with the building team. A system that is difficult to access can be harder and more expensive to keep in good condition.

Service and maintenance for existing systems

For fault diagnosis, provide the make and model, fault code, affected indoor units and a description of when the issue occurs. This helps us assess the support and information needed before attendance.

Planned maintenance is based on the equipment, usage and site conditions. It can include agreed checks of indoor and outdoor equipment, filters, drainage and operation, with defects recorded for follow-up.

Your questions, answered

What is the difference between VRF and VRV?

VRF describes variable refrigerant flow technology. VRV is Daikin’s name for its systems in this category. The important comparison is the suitability and configuration of the actual equipment for your building.

Can all VRF systems heat and cool different rooms at the same time?

No. That depends on the system configuration. Heat-recovery configurations can provide simultaneous heating and cooling to suitable zones; the project’s required operating modes should be confirmed during design.

Does VRF provide fresh air?

A VRF installation does not automatically provide the building’s outside-air ventilation. Ventilation needs to be assessed and coordinated separately, even where equipment and controls are integrated.

Can we keep the existing indoor units during replacement?

That depends on compatibility with the proposed outdoor units, refrigerant, pipework and controls. Manufacturer requirements need to be checked before assuming a partial replacement is possible.

Can different tenancies have separate controls?

Separate zones and operating schedules can be considered as part of the system design. Tell us how spaces are occupied, who should control them and whether tenancy or building-management interfaces are needed.

Tell us what you need

Let’s discuss your building.

Send the building layout, number and use of rooms, existing system details, any fault codes, and whether the work is a new installation or replacement.
