Thermal imaging: understand the temperature pattern

Infrared thermography shows surface temperature differences. Used alongside operating information and appropriate testing, it helps us identify areas that need closer investigation across your electrical, HVAC and mechanical systems.

  • Electrical equipment: investigate abnormal heating in accessible distribution boards, connections and motor-control equipment, with safe access and electrical responsibilities agreed first.
  • HVAC and refrigeration: assess accessible temperature patterns on plant, pipework and components when investigating poor performance or recurring faults.
  • Building fabric and insulation: identify surface patterns that may indicate heat loss, insulation gaps or moisture-related concerns for further checks.

Acoustic imaging: locate leaks and mechanical concerns

Our FLIR Si2-LD overlays sound information on a camera image, helping locate the source of a problem. We use it for targeted fault-finding and planned inspections of suitable operating plant.

  • Compressed air and pressurised gas systems: inspect accessible pipework, fittings, hoses and valves for leak indications.
  • Refrigeration and HVAC: help narrow down suspected leak locations where sufficient pressure difference and detectable sound are present. Confirmatory leak testing is selected for the system and refrigerant.
  • Rotating equipment: investigate bearing-related acoustic anomalies on suitable motors, fans, pumps and other mechanical assets. Follow-up checks establish the cause and required action.

Advanced reporting, with clear next steps

The deliverable is a report your facilities team can use to plan work. We agree the asset coverage, level of analysis and reporting format before the inspection.

  • Annotated thermal or acoustic images, with supporting visual photographs where appropriate.
  • Asset references, locations and the operating conditions recorded during the inspection.
  • A clear distinction between observed anomalies, confirmed defects and items needing further tests.
  • Priorities, recommended follow-up work and any access or inspection limitations.
  • Leak-rate and cost estimates where the camera supports the application and suitable pressure, gas and operating-cost information is available. These are estimates, with assumptions stated.
  • Before-and-after comparisons or repeat inspection records where suitable baseline data is available.

Qualified thermography support

Our service manager, Ben Hall, holds a CAT 1 ISO 18436-7 thermography qualification. This sits alongside Winter AC’s practical HVAC, refrigeration and electrical-for-mechanical capability, helping connect inspection findings with the work needed on site.

If your insurer, consultant or site requires a particular survey standard, certification level or report format, send those requirements with your enquiry so we can confirm the appropriate scope.

Build imaging into your maintenance plan

Imaging can be a standalone investigation or part of a WinterScope site audit and planned maintenance programme. Findings can be linked to your WinterAtlas asset records or existing register in an agreed format.

  1. Scope the inspection

Tell us the assets, symptoms and decisions you need help with. We agree access, plant operating requirements and the reporting deliverables.

  2. Inspect and record

Capture the relevant images and site observations, with equipment conditions and limitations documented.

  3. Review the findings

Assess the evidence, identify priorities and recommend any checks needed before committing to repairs.

  4. Close the loop

Arrange follow-up work and, where useful, repeat the inspection under comparable conditions to review the result.

Choose the right inspection conditions

Thermal results depend on surface materials, reflections, load and environmental conditions. Acoustic results depend on factors such as pressure, distance, access and background sound. We plan the visit around the question you need answered and record what could not be assessed.

A scan is one part of the diagnosis. Thermal imaging does not see through walls or confirm moisture by itself, and acoustic imaging does not identify a gas by its chemical composition. Additional measurements or tests may be needed.

Your questions, answered

What is the difference between thermal and acoustic imaging?

Thermal imaging shows infrared temperature patterns at a surface. Acoustic imaging maps sound onto a visual image to help locate a source, such as a pressurised leak or bearing-related anomaly. The methods answer different questions and can complement each other.

Which FLIR acoustic camera do you use?

We use the FLIR Si2-LD for pressurised leak detection and mechanical fault investigations. The equipment and inspection method are selected around the assets, access and issue being investigated.

Can acoustic imaging find refrigerant leaks?

It can help locate a leak when escaping gas produces a detectable sound and the pressure and site conditions are suitable. It does not identify the refrigerant or guarantee that every leak will be found. We confirm findings using an appropriate method for the system.

Can you inspect electrical switchboards?

Thermal inspection of accessible switchboards and electrical plant can be scoped with the required electrical personnel, safe access and operating conditions. Tell us about site rules and any insurer or consultant requirements when booking.

Will our plant need to shut down?

Many useful thermal and acoustic observations are made while equipment is operating. Access, isolation and any shutdowns depend on the equipment and site risks, so we agree these before the visit. Follow-up tests or repairs may require a separate shutdown.

What will the report include?

We agree the report scope first. It can include annotated images, asset locations, operating conditions, findings, priorities and recommended next steps. Supported leak-cost estimates and comparisons with earlier inspections can be included where the required data is available.

Can imaging prove a building is dry or free of defects?

No. A thermal pattern can highlight an area for investigation, but it does not prove the cause or reveal every concealed defect. Moisture measurements, intrusive checks or specialist assessment may be needed for a particular concern.

How much does an inspection cost?

We quote to the number and type of assets, site access, inspection conditions, travel and reporting requirements. Send your site address, equipment list, known symptoms and any deadline. We cover Greater Wellington, with Wairarapa and wider sites by arrangement.
